Ways to Prevent Cataracts

When the proteins of the eye are damaged, the lens can become cloudy and opaque and this is known as a cataract. Today cataracts affect millions of people, and the number of people affected increases each year, but there are ways to prevent cataracts.

Diseases like diabetes and mellitus can cause cataracts, so it’s important to get these diseases under control as quickly as possible. Other people acquire cataracts because of exposure to toxins or ultraviolet light. Other people get them because of some former eye injury. There are other factors that are also controllable. For example, cataracts appear more in people who smoke than those who don’t. People that are exposed to metals like cadmium can also acquire cataracts easily. Of course, not in all cases can cataracts be prevented. In some people it is just a part of the aging process.

Eye Surgery Solutions

The good news is that most cataracts can be remedied with lens implants like ReSTOR and Crystalens. But there are some things you can do to prevent them from forming. The first thing you need to do is get your defenses up. You need to change your diet and find the right nutritional strategies for your body, and the sooner you start, the better you will be. These changes won’t make much of a difference if the cataract has already started. If it has already started, then reducing the free radical formation through diet will minimize the growth. You need to avoid fatty foods to reduce these free radicals.

A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, vitamin E, and folic acid, gives your body the nutrients it needs to prevent cataracts.

If cataracts have already started forming, then you should take vitamin C as this helps your eyes fight off the growth. Recent studies show that people who take vitamin C rarely need to undergo cataract surgery.

As you can see, leading a healthy lifestyle are effective ways to prevent cataracts as well as other illnesses. The better you take care of your body, the longer it will take care of you. If you believe you are prone to get cataracts because of your medical history, the metals, and chemicals you are around, then you need to get more vitamins and minerals and start eating right.
